Custom research engagements
If you have an investment idea, we help you refine that view, test it, and explore better expressions of the underlying idea.
From off-the-shelf to Custom research
Most outside research arrives fully-formed and is disconnected from your specific situation. It tells you what the analyst thinks, but doesn't engage with what you think, why you think it, and where it might break.
Afflint research engagements are built around your question. We take an opinion and apply analytical due diligence to it. What's the mechanism? What has to be true for it to work? Where does it break, and under what conditions? Is there a sharper expression of the underlying view?
You get a thesis you can act on, monitor, and revisit.
Engagement types
Whether you're designing a portfolio from scratch or pressure-testing an existing one, we start with your goals - return targets, risk tolerance, time horizon, constraints. Then we apply analytical rigor: how concentrated are you, where are the tail risks, how does it hold up when conditions shift.
Structured hypothesis work around a specific catalyst, event, or regime shift. We build from first principles - what's the underlying mechanism, what has to be true for the trade to work - and help you find the sharpest expression of your view.
Independent evaluation of your existing investment strategy or framework. We apply our process to identify structural failure modes, unstated assumptions, and how your strategy performs when conditions shift.
Who this is for
Research engagements are for sophisticated investors who already have opinions, and want an independent perspective that's grounded in their specific context.
Engagements are time-limited and governed by a statement of work agreed upon before any work begins. Under research engagements, Afflint has no discretionary control over your portfolio - you have no obligation to act and no ongoing commitment.
If you are looking for ongoing management of your portfolio, our advisory services are designed for that.
